| About: | 2008 was the first year that the newly finished raised beds were in full production. There doesn't seem to be any major advantage or dis-advantage to gardening this way, not on this plot anyway. I just find it easer to weed and I think it looks neater than the traditional way. One construction down fall is that the paths in between the beds are prone to flooding as they have been made too level (unintentionally I might add). The anti-Pigeon, Rabbit and Pheasant cages made to protect the brassicas worked on all but the sprouts. As the sprouts grew taller than the cage and pushed the netting higher than the top of the cage, the pheasants got inside and devastated the crop. Note to self - grow shorter sprouts. The tomatoes that were grown outside did really well up to the point they were all infected with blight. this was the second year in a row this has happened, next year they will have to be sprayed early to prevent this. All in all, 2008 wasn't a too bad a year, and if you look on the bright side you can always do it all again next year. |
